What is Baccarat?

Baccarat is a popular card game played in casinos around the world. The game is played between the ‘player’ and the ‘banker, with three possible outcomes available on each hand. Depending on the version being played, the objective of the game is either to obtain a hand with a value closest to 9, or to bet on the winning hand. There are three variants of the game: Punto Banco, Chemmy and A Deux Tableaux.

History of Baccarat

The origins for the game are still debated, but the most popular version of events suggests that the game was created in Italy during the 1400s. It was given the name ‘baccara’ (zero) by Felix Falguiere, because all tens and face cards were worth zero in the context of the game.

The game eventually spread to France in the next couple hundred years where it was named Chemin de Fer (Chemmy). It was made popular amongst aristocrats by King Charles VIII and only nobles or wealthy people had the opportunity to take part. It wasn’t until French travellers made their way to England that the game became popular amongst the masses, and the creation of film icon James Bond led to a surge in the numbers interested in playing.

The most widely played version of Baccarat across the world is Punto Banco (player banker), where the bettor will back either the ‘player’ or ‘banker’ hand to win. This version of the game was developed in Havana in the 1940s before quickly spreading across North America and then the world.

How to play Baccarat

The objective of Punto Banco is to bet on the likelihood of either the player or banker obtaining a score as close to 9 as possible. The three bets available are: player win, banker win, or tie. The total of a hand is calculated based on the value of the cards held. Aces are worth 1, cards 2-9 hold their face value and 10s and picture cards are worth 0 points.

‘Once players have made their bets, cards are dealt face down to both the player and banker. This is then repeated so both have two cards each. The cards are then turned face up and the dealer calculates the points acquired by each hand. If either hand totals a score of 8 or 9 in the first round, this hand is the winner.

If either hand has a score of 0-5, another card will be drawn for them. If either hand has a score of 6 or 7, that player must stand. Any hand that exceeds the value of 9 has 10 subtracted from its total. For example, if two 8s are drawn for the player, then the value is 6 rather than 16.

What are the payouts in Baccarat?

Baccarat is one of the most popular online casino games because it provides only a slim house edge, meaning players have a good chance of doubling their stake. If you place a successful bet on the ‘player’ hand winning, you will be paid even money on your stake. If you place a successful bet on the ‘banker’ hand, you will be paid at odds of 19/20, allowing for a 5% commission for the casino. Should you make a successful bet on a tie, players will be paid out with odds around 9/1.
